Jacob's Faith: Breeds #11

Jacob's Faith
Lora Leigh
Wolf Breeds, book two
(Breeds, book eleven)
ebook, 171 pages
Published April 29th 2003 by Ellora's Cave
ISBN 9781843604761

They are a new breed, a new race. Engineered rather than born, trained rather than raised, and their unique genetics have created more than one surprise...

Jacob left Faith six years before, unaware that the mark he left on her also left her in an agony of sexual heat that never dimmed. Now Jacob and Faith are together again, but surprises lurk around every corner and dangers as dark and deadly as their very creation surround them in more ways than one.

In the last book, Wolfe's Hope, I was disappointed in not having the claiming scene told. This time around, in that regard, Leigh didn't leave me wanting. (She even backs it up a bit later so we can relive the teaser from the Wolfe's Hope.)

Jacob emerges from his shower, entering the public portion of his cell, only to find Faith, the lone female of their Breed, awaiting him on his cot. She's his gift, given by their creator, Bainesmith, who intends him to mate the too young woman. He finds little support or guidance from his alpha, Wolfe, imprisoned to his right; nor from Faith's brother, Aiden, housed on his left.

He knows his claiming of Faith was inevitable and that she too desires him. So with that truth, and little other choice, he takes her and marks her forever.

Six years later, after the great escape from the labs, he and Faith meet again for a single mission as Wolfe reclaims Hope. Once that is over, Jacob walks away, again. When they finally reunite for a second time, it's been another six months and Faith has had enough. Definitely my kind of woman- bitchy as hell! She thinks she's just delivering a letter for Wolfe to Jacob, but the letter has a gift attached. And the package is her.

So... I love this wolf Breed. Perfect blend of animal coldness and human hardness. Jacob has that jerk quality women always seem to go for, which I usually loathe, but for him- it works. All other kudos, though, definitely go to Faith. Feisty, deadly, and.. oh yeah, she bites.

“You have five minutes to call someone, anyone, I don’t care who, and order me the finest blend of coffee that rat hole town has, and a dozen beers. If it’s not sitting on this table…” a slender finger pointed furiously at the table in question, “…in one hour, you die.”

She appeared perfectly serious. Jacob leaned back in his chair, watching her warily. “Faith, I am not bringing coffee or alcohol into this house for a while, and neither are you. I’m telling you, right now, your system can’t handle it.” He crossed his arms over his chest and waited to see what she would do.

Her lips thinned, her face flushing as anger flooded her system. Anger and lust. As though the heat of her fury made her lust burn higher. Damn, he loved the scent of it. Her breasts rose above the low cut of her neckline as she took a deep breath. Her head raised, her shoulders straightened, then she was walking purposely from the room. That was not a good sign.

“Dammit, Faith,” he growled, jumping up from the table and following her as she entered the foyer and headed for the front door. “Come back here.”

He caught her halfway through the wide entrance hall, his hand catching her arm as he pulled her to a stop. She stopped easily enough. Long enough to reach down and bite him.

“Son of a bitch,” he yelled, jumping back to stare at his arm, then at the woman who had refused to bite anyone at anytime during training. He was fucking bleeding! Two perfect punctures marred the skin of his arm and oozed a small amount of blood. Dammit, he was partial to his blood and he preferred to keep it in his body.

She didn’t appear surprised or shocked at her own actions. She stared at him, her dark eyes glittering with fury, her cheeks flushed with it. “I want my coffee, and my beer. You can be as much an ass as you want to be, and you can hold me here till hell freezes over, but there are some things I refuse to live without. And while you’re ordering, get on whatever Internet connection this stinking jungle has and order me a vibrator. I want seven inches long, three inches around, D battery. Use that ineffective male brain and hunt up a vibrating egg as well. Preferably, white. I refuse to stay here without my necessities.”

Jacob stared at her incredulously. His gaze went to his arm, then back to her again. “You bit me, Faith,” he growled, ignoring her demands.

“And I’ll bite you again,” she assured him fiercely. “Don’t manhandle me, Jacob. This isn’t the Pack, and contrary to what you think, I refuse to acknowledge you as my mate. Mates do not desert each other. They do not walk away after fucking them, and they do not refuse them the few pleasantries their life has to offer. Namely, my caffeine and my beer. But since you are a typical Breed ass, you can supply my vibrators as well, because I refuse to fuck you.”

Wolfe's Hope: Breeds #10

Wolfe's Hope
Lora Leigh
Breeds, book ten
ebook, 41 pages
Published 2002 by Ellora's Cave
ISBN 1843603241

Hope believed Wolfe was dead, but he was only waiting for the right time to claim her. The scientist who created him, Hope's mother, has forced his hand. She wants her creation back, and she wants any children he may breed on her daughter.

He is a man whose DNA was altered, infused with the genetic code of the wolf. His unique genetic makeup has created a male unlike any other and will make itself known in the most surprising ways. Now Hope must convince her mate she hasn't betrayed him, and they must defeat the plans of a scientist gone mad.

Hope and Wolfe have quite the history. Hope's mother has been trying to breed her with Wolf since she was about seventeen. Wolfe marked her then, made her his, but he did no more than that. Then he was killed. Or so Hope thought.

It's been six years since he disappeared from her life. Six years of complete torture for her body while it ached to be taken by her mate. Now, suddenly, he's back.

The first part of this story either skipped over or completely left out everything that I actually wanted to read. The claiming. The moment Wolfe was supposedly killed. The time in between Wolfe's abduction of Hope and her subsequent awakening in the cabin. I got none of it. Where we do pick up, however, was filled with surprises for me. I didn't expect Wolfe to be so wary and aggressive towards Hope. He had quite a serious case of paranoia happening there. Not that it isn't entirely understandable.

And what a way to find out your virginity had been stolen. Ouch. Biggest mindfuck though was the tease for Jacob and Faith at the end. Now I gotta go hunt down their book... and maybe the other... um... nineteen. (Dayumm!) 3 out of 5 stars.

In any other circumstance, Jennifer Jones’s first meeting with Maclain Moore would have been called serendipity, a happy coincidence. She’s looking for a new roommate; he’s looking for a place to live. It doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy as hell, either.

But the man who crosses her threshold isn’t there to sign on the dotted line—he’s the bearer of news bad enough to shake the very foundation of her life. A life built around a fierce sense of independence, born of a violent incident from her past.

Mac is no stranger to heartache. His career in social work immerses him in it, plus he has his own share of skeletons rattling around in his closet. His attempts to comfort Jennifer bring the two of them closer together. With each touch, she becomes harder to resist. Mac’s body’s response would try the patience of a saint. And a saint he’s not.

Baring her soul isn’t high on her list, but she finds herself opening up to Mac in ways that make it hard to hold him at arm’s length. And as her life spins out of control, their growing passion becomes the only tangible thing she can cling to…

This book has been previously published and has been revised and expanded from its original release.

Warning: This book may spoil you for real relationships. It contains a beautiful woman with a dark and dangerous past, sensational sailboat sex and a leather-wearing, motorcycle-riding man who loves kids, knows how to cook and actually listens.

I'm not sure why it was exactly that I took an instant dislike to in these characters- perhaps it be that I just refuse to believe such people exist in this world. So open. So available.

From the moment you meet Jennifer, she's talking to this random stranger (that'd be Mac) as if she's known him for years. It's so odd that he thinks she's a hooker offering up her services. Turns out, it's the apartment she's selling. Or, uh, renting.

From there, she's opening up her door and walking away without a second glance. Then Mac's picking out her shoes and jewelry like he's her best bud, or gay-guy pal. Don't even get me started on that bathroom scene.

Too many 'that would never happen' scenes had my eyes doing dizzying somersaults in their sockets. Mac is just too good and way too nice. On the upside, he's very cute and playful. Yup, just like a puppy. And I could too easily picture the sad little puppy eyes on his face.

This story appeals to the goodness one craves in connecting with another person. And yeah, it sorta does spoil you for real relationships because, like I said, people like these don't exist! It has a pace that I would call skimming. Things move fast and there's very little background or depth. Honestly, the blurb makes the book sound much more intense than the story itself. Don't get me wrong- there are some rather serious issues. Alcoholism. Drug addiction. Domestic abuse. Rape. Murder. Yeah, there's quite a list but the cheesiness of the near perfect Mac mellows it all out. 3 out of 5 stars.
