Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter #1)

Night Pleasures
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Dark-Hunters, book one
Kindle Edition, 321 pages
Audiobook, 10+ hours
Published April 1st 2007 by St. Martin's Press

See how it all began…

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be immortal? To journey through the night stalking the evil that preys on humans? To have unlimited wealth, unlimited power?

That is my existence, and it is dark and dangerous. I play hero to thousands, but am known to none. And I love every minute of it.

Or so I thought until one night when I woke up handcuffed to my worst nightmare: an accountant. She’s smart, sexy, witty, and wants nothing to do with the paranormal.

My attraction to Amanda Devereaux goes against everything I stand for. Not to mention the last time I fell in love it cost me not only my human life, but also my very soul. Now I find myself wanting to believe that love and loyalty do exist. Even more disturbing, I find myself wondering if there’s any way a woman can love a man whose battle scars run deep, and whose heart was damaged by a betrayal so savage that he’s not sure it will ever beat again.

Never made it past the prequel to this series. Pretty sad, considering that book, Fantasy Lover, gave this blog its name.

Amanda Devereaux comes from a family all too familiar with magic and mischief. She herself wants nothing to do with the powers she possesses - powers of premonitions that she's failed to harness to the point where they actually benefit her. Plus, she's scarred from being unable to save her best friend when her powers gave her the foresight to do so. But when her sister is targeted by a daimon, and the dark hunter Kyrian gets literally chained to her side, Amanda faces up to the paranormal aspect of her existence.

While the Dark Hunter series doesn't do it for me the way the League series does, or did, I do find it an enjoyable experience. Albeit a simple one.

3 out of 5 stars.

Gul has spent her life running. She has a star-shaped birthmark on her arm, and in the kingdom of Ambar, girls with such birthmarks have been disappearing for years. Gul’s mark is what caused her parents’ murder at the hand of King Lohar’s ruthless soldiers and forced her into hiding to protect her own life. So when a group of rebel women called the Sisters of the Golden Lotus rescue her, take her in, and train her in warrior magic, Gul wants only one thing: revenge.

Cavas lives in the tenements, and he’s just about ready to sign his life over to the king’s army. His father is terminally ill, and Cavas will do anything to save him. But sparks fly when he meets a mysterious girl—Gul—in the capital’s bazaar, and as the chemistry between them undeniably grows, he becomes entangled in a mission of vengeance—and discovers a magic he never expected to find.

Dangerous circumstances have brought Gul and Cavas together at the king’s domain in Ambar Fort... a world with secrets deadlier than their own.

It should be obvious now... my earnest attempt to support the YA book genre.

This story is about Gul, a girl branded by fate with a birthmark foretold to bring the demise of a king. She will rise from an outcast to an assassin. From a slave to a servant. From a free woman to one promised in marriage to a prince. This journey will take her ever closer to fulfilling her fate.

And possibly, bore you.

Despite this epic sounding evolution, I didn't love this book. Even in reflecting on the many changes Gul was brought through, I was rather bored with the journey and even Cavas didn't manage to thrill me. There's magic. There's gods. Er, goddesses. Aspects I adore. But, unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me but I could see it holding more appeal for those closer to the tween/early teen age range.

Focusing on the life and struggles of professional women, “Fighting Youth” is a 2021 workplace drama directed by Mu Xiao Jie.

While the romance is rather subdued in this one, I'm very much enoying it. And for a refreshing twist, one of the lead males manages to have his own life and not have everything he does revolve around the lead female. I'm about twenty episodes in and she's barely registering on his radar. ;)

From the internationally bestselling authors of THE ILLUMINAE FILES comes an epic new science fiction adventure.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass tech wiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They're not the heroes we deserve. They're just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

Before I get into this I must say: That cover is perfection.

Now, where the book itself is concerned... it was fun! I did this read as an audiobook which offered not just one narrator, but an entire cast of voices lending their various accents and personalities to this diverse group of young, intelligent cadets. Each character possesses their own quirks and laugh out loud personas weaved into a refreshing and highly entertaining story.

Tyler Jones is in the right place at the right time when the life of Aurora, still subdued by cryo-sleep, ends up in jeopardy. He manages to save her, but sadly no one else, and it only costs him the draft. Returning to base, he's left with the leftovers of squad choices but still manages to score his friend, Cat, and his twin sister, Scarlet, on his team. He gains Kal (the warrior), Finian (the geek), and Zila  (the brain) as well.

Aurora is a girl from a past of which has no record. She has powers of no explanation. And soon, she manages to, oh so innocently, get Ty and his team looking at a court marshal, labeled fugitives, and all kinds of compounding troubles.

I'm going to link the cast list here, provided by the author and depicted below, because there wasn't a single character I didn't like. And I'm going to spare another moment to applaud this book for absolutely being a tale anyone could enjoy, regardless of gender.

As far as *this* reader is concerned... it checks all kinds of boxes. ☑ SciFi setting. ☑ A clear Alpha. ☑ His dependable, gonna-make-you-smile Beta. ☑  A friend meant to be a lover. ☑ A geek yearning to be noticed. ☑ Matebonding! OMG, Kal!! I swore if this turned into a triangle I was going to throw my airpods across the room.

5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommend. Especially in audiobook. (FREE with an Audible trial, but oh so worth the money if you buy it on its own.)

As childhood playmates, Luo Zhi (Hu Bing Qing) and Sheng Huai Nan (Hu Yi Tian) were nearly inseparable. Growing up, they attended the same schools and participated in the same activities, but as time passed their friendship slowly faded. Through high school, Luo Zhi focused more on her studies than anything else, and Huai Nan became nothing more than a distant acquaintance. Yet secretly, her heart still longed for the boy who made her laugh, all those years ago.

Now in university, it is merely by coincidence that Luo Zhi and Huai Nan attend the same school. Though no longer a part of each other’s lives, Luo Zhi can’t seem to forget her long-lost friend. Every glimpse she catches of Huai Nan makes her heart race, but with their lives heading in such different directions, the connection between them seems to have all but disappeared. Pining for a boy she has loved for fifteen years, Lou Zhi is resigned to her fate, accepting the fact that her feelings for Huai Nan will remain unrequited forever. But Destiny, it would seem, has other plans.

Finding themselves unexpectedly thrown together during an excursion in Red Canyon Valley, Luo Zhi and Huai Nan’s old friendship is rekindled and soon sparks of love begin to fly. But the meddling of others makes things complicated and a series of misunderstandings threatens to ruin everything. Can these reunited friends overcome the challenges before them, or will their new-found love fade before it even has a chance to bloom?

Based on the novel of the same name by Ba Yue Chang An, “Unrequited Love” is a 2021 romantic drama directed by Li Mu Ge.

It's an endearing enough story. Girl meets boy. Girl likes boy. Girl manages to mouth off at every opportunity that doesn't involve her feelings for said boy. The best parts of the story are all in her head. Which only makes them worthless and utterly infuriating.

Meanwhile, lead boy notices the girl. Is moved by the girl. But doesn't know who the girl is. Or whom she's not.

I'm watching it. But I'm not loving it.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

What caught me was the cover. Assassin's Creed spread all over it. What hooked me was the blurb. Resistance? Empire? Do I really need to say the words 'Star Wars'? And it's a dystopian fantasy based on ancient Rome, so, yes, if I'm going to read anything YA this was certainly going to be it.

Now, I didn't want to get ahead of myself. It could easily all go horribly wrong in the end as it did in the Hunger Games. And Divergent. And nobody wants to revisit that let down.

If you browse this blog for any amount of time, you'll find that I'm not one that's big on Young Adult books. Most of the ones I find are trivial. Some shallow. Sone menial. I need substance in my literature. I need depth in my fiction. I also want to make that very clear because I am admittedly bias when it comes to this genre of romance.

Laia, pressured by her parents' legacy and desperate to save her captive brother, is thrust into the life of a slave so as to serve as a spy for the Resistance. She needs their help in saving her brother, the only family she has left, from punishment for treason against the Empire, a tyrannical government order that seeks to conquer and control all Scholars, among other things. But despite being a daughter of two of the rebellion's finest fighters, Laia is in no way prepared for the task put to her.

Inside this oppressive order's training academy, is Elias. The Commandant's son, with fourteen years of strict training behind him, he is, on the surface, the epitome of what a soldier should be. But days away from graduation as a Mask, Elias has but one thing on his mind: desertion. To further complicate matters, he's suddenly thrust onto a path of becoming Emperor. His feelings for his best friend, Helene, have gotten complicated. And then Laia arrives.

Truth be told, I was far more interested in Elias than Laia. But that's nothing new. His portion of the book will span trials that will challenge his fears and loyalty but, more so,  challenge his sense of justice and, regardless of which path he takes, Elias will become a killer numerous times over. While he and Laia will be forced to make tough choices, in the end, they are alive because others will make tougher choices. Story of YA life.

Why do all the Young Adult books I pick up have love triangles? Perhaps this is where the foundation of my bias against YA books lie, the unnecessary angst. Teenage protagonists too raw, too immature to know themselves let alone their hearts. Hearts? No. These are hormones.

Laia physically reacts to each and every boy that shows her interest. It's downright sickening. Perhaps it is why I prefer characters with enough maturity to know that not every handsome face deserves a second glance. And female characters hardened enough not to whine.

Not only did I prefer Elias over Laia. But I preferred Helene over her, too.

That said, this book, Ember in the Ashes, is what more YA should strive to be, as the numerous literary awards it's won would attest. And even though it holds the typical love triangles and weak females, there's enough turmoil to balance the frivolous teenage problems of feelings. There's a darker side wherein rape is a very real encounter that I think fewer books need to give mind to but reality being what it is and all, I can't fault its appearance.

3 out of 5 stars.

Every Life Has a Price

Dakari Tievel has been marked for death by the infamous League. Staying barely one step ahead of the assassins out to end her life, she must find the legendary Eve of Destruction. But Eve is a lot more than just a bounty hunter who calls the shadows home. She comes with an interesting crew of friends and family who have no problem defying the League that rules their worlds with an iron fist.

Now they must rely on the most unlikely of allies to keep Dakari safe, and themselves alive. Provided he doesn't betray them.

In a universe where the League is law, it's killed or be killed.

This ridiculously quick read opens up in the POV of Dakari who has just had a Thrill-Kill contract put on her life. On the run, she's given precious information that leads her to Eve and her lethal team. A team that includes Eve's sister, Jayne, whom we all know and possibly love, and also Jinx, Dakari's long lost (and believed to be dead) older brother.

From there, we take on the conclusion of the story through Jinx's POV. As a whole, this is more like a teaser chapter that just happens to be included with two other stories: "Neighbors" and "Fire and Ice." The latter of which is Adron's story which can also be found in the "In Other Worlds" anthology. Adron is the eldest son of Nykyrian and Kiara (Born of Night, League #1).

A fate worse than death . . .

Bastien Cabarro survived the brutal slaughter of his entire family only to have his wife pin their murders on him. Made Ravin by The League, he is now a target for their assassins-in-training to hunt and kill. The average life expectancy for such beings is six weeks. But defying the odds is what this Gyron Force officer does best, and Bastien won’t rest until he lays his betrayers in their graves.

Ten years later, he has one chance to balance the scales of justice, provided he relies on his former wingman— the very sister of the woman who testified against him. Major Ember Wyldestarrin joined the outlaw Tavali the day Kirovar fell into the hands of a tyrant, and she and her team were left on an outpost to die under the barrage of enemy fire. The last thing she wants is to be involved in politics again. But if she doesn’t bring Bastien in, her sister will pay the ultimate price. Now she has to find some way to betray her former wingman before he catches on and kills her. Even so, treachery doesn’t come easy to a woman who took a loyalty oath to protect her homeworld and comrades-in-arms, especially when Bastien means more to her than just another partner.

Yet as she tries to do right for her family, she learns that Bastien doesn’t just hold the key to the fate of Kirovar, he is vital to The Sentella-League war, and to The Tavali. If she hands him over, three nations fall. If she doesn’t, her entire family dies. Their fates are all in her hands, and time for all of them is quickly running out.

I admit it. I was warned. But despite this installment being a copy/paste filler that feels like a half-ass slap in the face, none of that quite pissed me off as much as the leading male- Bastien.

The story begins in the prologue with a fast paced meeting of our two protagonists as Bastien shows up when Ember needs someone most and saves the life of her sister, Alura. (Saving that witch will prove to be his first of many mistakes.) And from that moment, and throughout the entire book, we're scene jumping.

First to where Bastien proposes marriage to Ember after a yearlong romance only to be turned down outright. And here he does the one thing that will f*ck his life over for years to come. Bastien retaliates.

Now you'll find out in good time why Ember refused his proposal but so many years will pass first. And Bastien will make one stupid decision after another in this time. He'll even marry her sister. Is this suppose to be some ridiculous nod to the Ross and Rachel fiasco. Where is your loyalty? Where is your honor?!

So many (hell, nearly ALL) of Kenyon's characters are tortured souls who are victims of things beyond their control whether it be their parentage, their race, being in the wrong place/wrong time in the heart of political chaos, but Bastien is simply a victim of himself. Ends up in a manipulated marriage, accused of murdering his entire family, stripped of his royal titles, outcast from his people, marked Ravin... And  he's eyeing Nykyrian's daughter, Thia. And Jayne. *facepalm*

No, Ember. No. I want better for you, girl.

I've been kidnapped by Zeus. Plucked from the streets of Manhattan and frightened half to death by a freaking Olympian god. And now I'm trapped in the Underworld, being forced to compete in a series of deadly trials for the position of Queen of the Underworld. Which would mean marrying Hades, the utterly terrifying Lord of the Dead. Who the hell wants a husband at all, let alone one made of smoke and riddled with death?

I have to get back home, to New York and my brother. But I can't leave without completing the trials and they've been designed for a godly Queen, not Persephone - barista and botanical garden enthusiast. I'm surrounded by lethal, all-powerful maniacs. Sexy-as-hell maniacs, sure, but as dangerous as they come. And I'm going to have to prove to all of them that there's a goddess of hell inside me. It's the only way I'll survive the Hades Trials. But then what? And why, why, why am I so desperate to see under Hades smoky exterior and find out what he's hiding from me?

If I win the trials, I have to marry the devil himself. But losing might mean losing my life.

Alright. All right. I'm a fan of mythology. As in, I spent my teenage years completely enthralled by medieval history and Greek gods. And even though that was a lifetime ago and I have the memory span likened to a chimpanzee, I manage to recall a few of the details. The story of Hades and Persephone is certainly one of those tales that sticks with you.

In this creative and well-written spin, Persephone is a college student of agricultural studies, working part time at a local coffee shop, when a blonde haired, blue eyed Zeus meanders in and suddenly, her entire formulated world crashes in around her.

We're going to stop there for a small mid-review rant. As a female who spent nearly two decades working in customer service, I need to know. I need to understand this. And I don't mean to generalize but why, WHY do heterosexual males appear to inherently possess this compulsory need to talk up a female, specifically to make her smile? Is it some kind of validation? Some small victory the male chromosome thrives on? I've yet to encounter this in a female. I don't personally feel the need to make a stranger smile be it man or woman. I'm going to handle my business and leave you the hell alone. With respect.

So someone tell me. Are my lenses blurred? Or does anyone else share this reality with me?

Back to topic.

Forced into a competition testing intelligence, loyalty, glory, and hospitality, the ultimate prize is to become the wife of Hades, Lord of the Underworld. It's a title she not only doesn't want, but has already held. And even though she has no memory of this place or these people, she finds her one inkling of familiarity in the flashes of Hades' silver eyes.

I oohed and aahed over Hades. And while it took a handful of chapters to get to the point where I couldn't put this book down, I did get there. And steamrolled right up to a cliffhanger ending. Argh!

4 out of 5 stars.
