Petrify: A Dark Horror Romance

Whatever he is made of, so am I.

The Pianist

Mallary Doyle wants nothing more than to make it as a professional pianist. When the affluent Beauchene family offers her a position as tutor for their young son, she knows this is her chance. But immediately upon arriving at their manor, things are not what they seem…

The Ghost

Fifteen years spent locked within the walls of Beauchene manor. Faceless. Terrorizing the inhabitants of this house with his rage, reminding the family that he still exists, even when they’ve made every effort to forget. Until she arrives and captivates him with her music.

There is a ghost stalking the halls, stalking her… and soon his obsession will become carnal.

The horror vibes of The Boy meets the romance of The Phantom of the Opera.

Mallary Doyle never applied for the job as the newest piano tutor to the heir of the Beauchene family. They sought her out nonetheless.

Hefty pay, a private wing all to herself, and the opportunity to get her name in the mouths of the who's who in the world of symphonies, how was a girl to say no?

So what if a certain ghost seems obsessed with her? What harm could the phantom truly do?

This... was far more than I had anticipated. And you would think a guy who's spent the last fifteen years neglected and banished to the walls of his family's estate would take the crown of being the most fucked up in the mental health arena, but oh, you would be wrong.

Bastien's motivations were simple. And for that, he was a delight. A bit weak in the foreplay game, but he had other qualities that kept me begging for his POV. Seriously, his chapters were far too short.

Mallary on the other hand... Between her mood swings and mental gymnastics, she was much harder to keep up with. Cursing him one second and begging in the next. She provoked him to take her time and time again. And I could never decide where her truths became lies.

That heat though.

Puppet Master (Puppets & Property #1)

Selfish... Yet self-sacrificing. Clever... Yet blind.

Puppet Master
Nicole Cypher
Puppets and Property, book one
ebook, 322 pages
Independently published July 17, 2026

He says his job is to train me.

Miles from civilization, buried in the wooded hills of New York, lies a cult compound known as the Shadow Sanctum. Sawyer Hansley—a man who’s made a career out of conditioning women into obedience—is their newest weapon.

When I wake up alone in a cold, dark cave, he tells me the cult has claimed me as their next member.

They want him to force my submission. My adoration. My obedience.

In other words: they want him to break me. And he’s all too willing to oblige.

What he doesn’t know? I’m not like his previous victims.

By the time we’re through, it won’t be me who’s broken.

A note from Nicole: This trilogy is for readers who crave dark romance with depth — intelligent characters, layered psychology, slow-building obsession, and strong thriller vibes. It includes cult elements, intense themes, psychological manipulation, and dark, mature content.

If that’s your kind of story, welcome in.

Luna awakens in a cell, inside a cave, with the taste of copper in her mouth and fragments of a memory of falling asleep in her bed.

Cue the mile-a-minute thoughts. Her brain is spitfiring at a rapid pace. It's a choppy writing style that's either going to trigger a gravitate or recoil response.

I am in the camp that gravitates.

And then, we meet Sawyer.

Color me intrigued.

He's a con artist with a history. One that involves an island and gullible women.

I did cringe a bit at that minor detail.

But he's a highly intelligent male who has crafted his gifts of memory and manipulation to outwit the best of them. And his next target is the infamous and richly funded cult, the Shadow Sanctum.

To infiltrate, he'll be tested. Sawyer has three weeks to break their newest victim potential Seraph.

Luna.

The spice hits a bit sooner than I had anticipated. Then again, when one is being abducted with the purpose of being groomed into a soul purifier, whose basic function is to f### the demon out of you... I suppose that's not too abrupt at all. All in the name of "training".

I was introduced to this book via a Facebook dark romance book influencer, and while I knew little, I was aware of a potential plot twist. That, and the blurb, had me side-eyeing Luna from page one and therefore softened any shock that might have fallen from the reveal of the Puppet Master's true identity. No less awe, though. And shout out to the stereotypical sibling rivalry angle. My tiny complaint would be all the things Sawyer is up to off-page. It loses focus of the plot and takes away from the rhythm of the story.

Neutral on the semi-cliffhanger ending. They basically flip the table and reset the board.

Anticipating a return to this series to discover what these two manage to inflict upon one another next.

Wed him. Bed him. Slit his throat.

I killed the king.
Crowned myself in his blood,
But the curse still festers.

To break it, I need Death,
On his knees,
A ring on his finger.
My blade at his throat.

The god fights me to the grave,
Evades my touch,
Mocks my wanting.

He would rather tear himself apart,
Than let me close enough to end this.
But I didn't come this far to lose. I came to crown him mine.

Welcome to your wedding, my love.

Rip out the last three chapters.

Rip. Out. The. Last. Three. Chapters.

Wed me. Bed me. Slit my throat.

Born in dirt, raised in rot, I dig graves for the dead, while the living decay around me.

When my brother coughs blood, he appears.

A man too polished for the graveyard, with a bargain too cruel for the light: Seduce the King. Become the Queen. Die. And my brother lives.

Kael is a nightmare of living ruin, the rotting ruler of a festering realm. And Vale is his shadow, the cold architect of my demise.

One man needs my heart to beat. The other plans to stop it forever.

They think I’m a pawn. But I’m the gravedigger's daughter. And I know exactly where to bury them.

Welcome to the funeral.

I've long had the intent to pick up a book by this author but I specifically blame Kaz Brekker for the inspiration to pick up this particular story. The trauma of using his brother's bloated corpse to return to shore must have played a part in there somewhere. That said...

When I say I want the villain—

It's this right here.

It's everything within the pages of this book.

There is no greater good. There is no lesser evil. No right. No wrong.

Is Kael the MMC? Is Vale the MMC? Is everyone lying? Is no one lying?

I didn't know. Wasn't sure I cared. I was just along for a giddy, mindblowing ride.

The Wolf and the Crown of Blood

Let me show you how a god prays.

The Wolf and the Crown of Blood
Elizabeth May
The Broken Accords, book one
Hardcover, 560 pages
Published January 27, 2026
ISBN 9781035912896

A princess and a war-weary god met in the ashes of a broken city, forging a pact in blood and sacrifice.

Now, centuries of fragile peace are on the brink of collapse…

Bryony Devaliant was born to die — again and again. In Vartena, royal blood is the currency of peace, with every monarch sacrificed and resurrected to appease the gods. But when rebellion stirs, the god-king sends his deadliest weapon to restore order: an immortal assassin known only as the Wolf.

Evander has perfected the art of killing over centuries — until his latest target becomes the one person he cannot destroy. When forbidden desire burns between the assassin and the sacrificial princess, their connection threatens the fragile boundary between gods and mortals. And when that boundary shatters, empires crumble. Because when gods fall in love with mortals, mortals are always the ones to break.

Inspired by Beauty and the Beast and Eros and Psyche, this dark, seductive tale is perfect for fans of Raven Kennedy's Plated Prisoner series, with the wit and spice of Callie Hart's Quicksilver. Packed with dark fairytale vibes, gothic romance, and tropes like enemies to lovers, forced proximity, death pacts, and villain-gets-the-girl, this is a story where love is as deadly as it is irresistible.

Based on how the author was promoting this book, I had expected to be much deeper into the smut than I was at twenty percent in.

Due to a centuries' old blood pact, Bryony and her kin are fated to be sacrificed to the god Alexios. Every two weeks. Slain on an alter and brought back by the Oracles.

But Bryony has earned the people's adoration and Alexios decides it better to end her than to continue to suffer their prayers calling out to her instead of him.

So he removes the mark of his protection, bans her from the temple, and decrees her an Oathbreaker.

For there is no greater sin that that.

And so, Alexios sends his Wolf, Evander, to carry out his will. However, two things come into play. First, Bryonny and Evander have crossed paths before when Evander was hunting another target. In that encounter, Bryonny bargained that should the Wolf ever be sent for her that he would imagine her his equal and give her a good death.

Secondly, before Bryonny was forced from the temple she managed to plunge the dagger into her own chest, therefore fulfilling her obligation and is not, in actuality, an oathbreaker.

And Evander, finding amusement in his boredom, not only spares her life, but offers himself up as an outlet for her rage.

It is dark and bloody.

There is so much that this book got right. The monologues. The yearning. Forcing the protagonist to view the world from her enemy's viewpoint. All so good! Unfortunately, I just failed to bond with any of the characters. Bastien and Theo didn't intrigue me at all. Alexios has some potential but he is what he is. I do have lingering questions but none so important as to inspire a compulsion to continue the series.

3 out of 5 stars. First started this in January. Grew bored and put it on pause. Finished in June.

I did two things I can't take I raised my cat from the dead, and I killed the boy who saw me do it.

Necromancy is forbidden. Erased from history. The kind of magic that gets you hunted by the Academy's best, Elite Soulren who've spent decades killing anything that threatens their power.

Falcen Reaves finds me, anyway.

He's cursed, ruthless, and supposed to drag me to the Academy to be broken or destroyed like every other late awakener before me.

Instead, he keeps me alive. Trains me. Watches me with a cruelty that feels like hunger.

Because my power isn't normal. There's something inside me, ancient, violent, and growing stronger every time I consume a soul.

It recognizes him. His curse. The darkness he's drowning in.

And gods help me, I want him despite it all.

Every training session becomes more dangerous. His control is slipping. So is mine. We're bound by a curse neither of us understands, a pull between souls that shouldn't exist, and a hunger that matches violence for violence.

He's my captor. My teacher. The only person who knows what I am.

And the bond between us might kill us both.

Resonance is a dark romantasy drenched in soul-magic, deadly trials, and a love forged in blood and Void. Perfect for fans of morally gray heroes and heroines who refuse to be broken.

Boy Falls First?

Our leading lady is heavily in the thralls of lust from the moment she lays eyes on the MMC, but he falls first? Okay, we'll go with that.

(Plot twist: He fell first.)

This is not a book for those that need to consult trigger warning pages when it comes to dominant males or abuse. This is deliciously dark. The MMC is not gentle. He is not soft. He will command her. He will harm her. He will strive to break her, because it is his duty and if he doesn't, the Academy will.

Their first kiss was a bit of mess. It felt like something was edited out. Something vital: the actual kiss. One moment he's pulling her against him and in the next his tongue is darting into her mouth. Immediate reread of the situation and all I could envision was some kind of serpentine creature molesting her face and groin. I'm not certain how that made it past the editor. Not certain how a number of instances (grammatical, factual, etc) made it through the final edit actually.

And I was this close to turning the word 'sternum' into part of a drinking game.

Adored Verily. A leading lady that continuously left me flabbergasted. Where every other chapter is either Girl, what are you doing? or Are you for real right now?!.

Woman is being accused of screwing an Elite for special treatment one minute and we've barely turned a cheek before, in a very public place, she's throwing down the What do I mean to you/Where is whatever this is going conversation.

She is an optomist with empathy to spare.

Falcen, I loved. He is my spirit animal. Morally grey from head to toe.

He calls her Veilbreaker. 💕

But what the hell am I suppose to do with that ending? Our man's soulless corpse got turned into a nether drake!

Once Upon a Demon's Heart (Cruel Fates #1)

Cruel Fates, book one
Audiobook, ~8 hours

This is no fairytale—It’s yearning and guilt of two burdened hearts that will leave readers breathless.

Alira, a devoted demigod knight, has found herself trapped in the throes of a brutal curse. A time loop in which the demon kingdom’s Blood Knight kills her every time. She is haunted by the attack she led on the innocent village of Thornhall, and her guilt consumes her from the inside out. After the twentieth time loop, she has finally had enough. Something has to change, lest she die at the Blood Knight’s hand for the rest of time. A choice she hopes she won’t regret—one to end the war between demigods and demons. Alira is shocked when she realizes that she’s marrying the very knight who has slain her so many times.

A daughter of Venus and a duke of demons. Their love is both cursed and destined—a marriage to save the fragility of their kingdoms.

Kalel is as cruel as they come. A devourer who survives on the gilded blood of demigods. He wants to hate her as much as he did when Thornhall fell, but he finds himself warring with his heart over his emotions for her. Together, they unravel the truths of Faultore, that perhaps not everything is as it seems. The gods may be pulling more strings than they should.

It’s not a question of what love can conquer; it is a matter of what they are prepared to demolish in the path of it.

I began the audiobook of this tale while out suffering manual labor in the garden, quite unfamiliar with the work of Theodore Zephyr.

Unfamiliar, yes, and also ill prepared for that perfectly pitched demon growl of a voice.

Breathless. Speechless. Both narrators were excellent.

Alira is a demigod knight that is caught in a time loop where she is fated to die at the sword of the demon Blood Knight. Eventually, she makes the decision to abandon her people. There's no future for her anyway.

And so, she returns to a grove where, years ago, she met a demon child. She did not know him long. He seemed to die that very day.

There she again meets a demon. Kalel. An apothecary.

And she comes away with a new plan. To assauge her guilt. To end the unceasing wars. To hopefully break the loop. She offers herself as a sacrifice in a treaty that would see her wed to a demon. As a daughter of Venus, she would be coveted by her enemy. To kill her. To torture her. To breed her.

The offer is accepted and her would-be husband comes to collect.

And what he finds is a knight in ebony armor. The same knight responsible for his mother's death, and the deaths of so many more of his kind.

He hates her.

But what they come to discover is that he was the boy. And she was that half-god girl.

The only one he would spare in his quest for vengeance.

The same one he would see cursed to repetitiously kill.

4.5 out of 5 stars. I need another hundred pages!

Plated Prisoner, book one
Audiobook, 9+ hours

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule.

Gold.

Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold.

Even me.

King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I’m called his precious. His favored. I’m the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don’t leave the confines of the palace, I’m safe.

Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.

Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged, and I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong.

Because these bars I’m kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage.

But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I’d never left.

The myth of King Midas reimagined. This compelling adult fantasy series is as addictive as it is unexpected. With romance, intrigue, and danger, the gilded world of Orea will grip you from the very first page.

Please Note: This book contains explicit content and darker elements, including mature language, violence, and non-consensual sex. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. This is book one in a series.

If you're in the mood for dirty words and depraved acts with an overly possessive MMC, this is your book. If sexist, irredeemable men are your trigger, steer clear. Abort mission. This is not and may never be for you. And while this book is many things, a tale of romance it is not. If, however, you're in the mood to fuel a raging fire of misandry and let your feminist flag fly, then by all means, this is going to give you your moment.

She is his most coveted possession. Touched by his hand, every part of her skin is gold. Kept in a cage. Never shared, not once, in the ten years she's existed in his care.

Until she becomes the bargaining chip in an alliance that will get Midas an army to join him against Fourth Kingdom.

Hate him. Curse him. Do your absolute worst. But Midas, the villain that he is, is a master of the chess board. And Digby! That Dark Rhysand turned king slayer that he was! And Sail! Oh, Sail. Not Sail!

Oof. My heart. I'll never hear that Awolnation song the same way again.

For the first dozen chapters or so, I was certainly questioning what I'd gotten myself into. But after that first twist... Oh, this was so much fun! Don't get me wrong, it's dark. So dark that I had the urge to vomit at one point. But Auren was a delight and the voice of the reader in the audiobook was superb. Definitely did the character justice.

5 out of 5 stars. To a book with zero romance. What the hell?

The viral TikTok stalker dark romance, burning with high heat, hilarious banter, and a love story like you’ve never seen before. Can you handle the ride?

I want someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

Trauma nurse Alyssa Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

I want things most people don’t, craving darkness and depravity instead of light and love.

Joshua Hammond has an infamous father—the kind of man that true-crime podcasts love talking about. Josh has spent his life avoiding the limelight, but his online persona is another story. At night, he posts masked thirst traps for his millions of fans to drool over, but one follower has caught his Aly. After reading a comment begging him to break into her house wearing a mask, he decides to take her up on her offer.

Together, Aly and Josh live out their darkest fantasies, unaware that Aly has captured the attention of someone else. Someone with far more sinister intentions than a little light stalking. As Josh turns from predator to protector and the stakes heighten, he must ask himself how far he’s willing to go for the woman he’s obsessed with.

Lights Out is a fast-paced dark romance with a morally gray male lead. Some themes and scenes may be disturbing to readers. Please check the TWs at the beginning of the book.

I laughed. I blushed. I questioned the mental health of the author. And yeah, I cringed on a few occasions.

But the one thing I could not do is predict this book. He wouldn't. Oh he would! He's not. Damn it, he is! Could not keep my jaw off the floor.

Dark, contemporary romance may not be my thing but if you're going to experience this book, do it through the audiobook because Josh is amazing and the casting for his part... Chef's kiss.
