Tahlia, Marius, Fara, and the rest of the dragon-riding Mist Knights are off on another mission...

When the order flies north to fight the pirates harassing the coastline, they discover the infamous Eelsmen have a new high captain.

Not only is this individual unknown, he is an Unseelie—a powerful Seer from the Realm of Night.

And Tahlia's weaver magic sees a dangerous connection between this enemy and her dearest friend, Fara.

What does this mean for the Healer? For the order?

Dive into this bonus book today to enjoy runic magic, new enemies to lovers romance, banter, sea monsters, spicy romance, and of course, dragons!

"Who is he?"

Fara! Gurrrrl! It's your time to shine.

Tahlia may be mated to the Commander of the Mist Knights, but Fara's intended is so much more powerful than Marius.

He's bored by him, too.

Teague, an Unseelie, pops up in this story as the new pirate Captain with his own plan of vengeance ready to be enacted. But first, he needs to steal away his mate.

It's simple. It's quick. But when it's done then the real spice happens because *finally* the author delivers on what she oh so dastardly skipped over in the second book: the consummation of Marius and Tahlia's relationship.

It's a bonus scene that shan't be missed!

What do tomatoes, scowling, and artifacts that could end the entire world have in common?

You guessed it—Tahlia and Marius.

When the Fae king sends dragon riders Tahlia and Marius on an undercover mission to recover the invisible crown, an artifact that gives the wearer the ability to control minds—and a host of other nasty things—it’s clear there will be danger.

For one thing, the madman currently in possession of the crown has a bit of a god complex. But danger is nothing new. And the mission will finally allow Tahlia a chance to cross the Veil and explore the world of humans, not to mention making Marius wear a ridiculous costume, which is pretty much Tahlia’s favorite part of the whole thing.

Tahlia is fairly certain they’ll win the day. But when they discover the crown is hidden behind a labyrinth of deadly traps, her hope withers. If they don’t succeed, her soul-bonded dragon will never fly again. She might even die.

So yeah, failure isn’t an option.

Crown and Dragon, Bound by Dragons Book Three, is a lighthearted fantasy romance with Fae, boatloads of banter, spice, and page-turning excitement. Great for fans of Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses, this series will have you gasping and grinning at every turn!

This story was just silly and odd with a bit of spice thrown in.

Undercover on a secret mission to collect a magical crown during a Tomato Festival, Marius gets attacked by an imaginary minotaur and nearly drowned by a siren. After that, he was done with the bs and being surrounded by humans. Slamming doors. Smashing locked boxes. The typically cool and collected Commander wants this thing done.

They finally find the crown, just as the king with evil intentions walks into the room, and Marius shoves the crown onto his head. Thus giving him the power of mind control. And how does our dear Tahlia respond?
"This is great!" Tahlia whispered. "Oooh, tell me to do something. I want to see how it feels."
Smh. She truly is a ray of fucking sunshine.

Kingdom of Spirits

Published May 30, 2024

Her life, or her love. Tahlia can’t have both.

When Tahlia’s commander dies under mysterious circumstances, the only suspect is her former mentor’s daughter…their new commander. If Tahlia accuses her without proof, she’ll lose everything she’s worked for. Including her soul-bonded dragon.

To make matters worse, something is wrong with her captain. Marius won't meet her gaze, and he won't utter one word about the new commander. Like, not a syllable. As if maybe he isn’t able.

But Talia can't just walk away from him. A pull deep within her says they might be fated mates, and he is about to set off on a secret mission. She can't let him go alone, not with that creepy, clouded look in his eyes. And not with the fate of the dragon riders resting in such dangerous hands.

Dark magic and evil forces are rising in Kingdom of Spirits, and Tahlia is determined to uncover the truth. Even if it means risking her life.

If you liked Fourth Wing, but are searching for a lighter-hearted read with humor and just a dash of spice, this series is perfect for you.

This is NOT a standalone! Check out Bound by Dragons Book One for Talia and Marius's first encounter.

With fae, dragons, dragon riders, banter, found family, and touch her and die, this fantasy romance will have you flipping pages all night long.

***This series is upper YA/NA and contains mature language and situations.

It's been two weeks, and for the most part, Tahlia is getting along fine in her new role as a Mist Knight. Although being accepted by her fellow knights proves itself an obstacle to be overcome. On a positive note, she has fully bonded to her Seabreak dragon, Vodolija.

Meanwhile, Marius, the planner that he is, is scribbling a q&a that is probably considered a red flag by today's generation. What would you change about your past? Do you like to travel? If so, where? Younglings? Younglings?

Marius Leos Valentius. Chill out, my guy. Just two weeks ago, you asked for Ophelia's hand in marriage. This isn't an episode of The Bachelor.

So the plot for this sequel fell flat for me. Commander Gaius ends up dead. Tahlia questions Ophelia's version of events of allegedly finding the body. And Marius ends up cursed by Ophelia via runes, unable to divulge said curse and his touching of Tahlia would lead to her death.

Yeah. No. Sorry, not sorry. I'm not impressed with the curse bit.

But at least the Katk livened things up with a battle and we got to have a wedding.

The Moon & Its Eyes (Cain's Song #1)

...that kind of fear has a different velocity.
It doesn't hit you; it embraces you.

The Moon and Its Eyes
Mehrin U
Kindle edition, 305 pages
Independently published December 3, 2020
ISBN 9798576292509

This book was received through a Goodreads giveaway

Accused of murdering the emperor, stealing a forbidden magic from the moon, and releasing a death god, Aarith Anasahara has been exiled to a realm beyond the Shoreless Seas.

With his life hanging in the balance, he is forced to recount the earlier years of his life by his captors—including his trials through Mirradalia’s most prestigious school of alchemy, the mystery around the death of his parents more than a decade ago, and his journey to becoming the world’s most infamous alchemist.

Aarith Anasahara has been captured by Hal Speight for crimes against the realm and whilst on their journey, Aarith captivates Hal and his crew with the story of his youth. A story that began when he was just fourteen years old, on the day he was to confess his love to a village girl and sign his life away to the guilds.

Instead, Aarith is confronted with a creature of his past, a harbinger that he is convinced is the beginning a horrible assault upon the village. The likes of which that overran what was once his home and slaughterd his mother years before. So, with voices in his head and the urgings of a leopard, Aarith, who has never shown a speck of magic in his life, thrusts himself into Dhrakar's trials.

He is accompanied, practically from the beginning, by Cain. Later meets Raven, the emperor's granddaughter. And a number of classmates, both kind and wicked, that includes his crush, Elsa.

The story holds enough action while the trials are simple enough. Fetch a flower. Survive the night. Battle the demon. In the end, I wasn't sure what was real, what was only imagined, or who won, or what was lost.

Throne of Glass (TOG #1)

That's not even the best part!

Throne of Glass
Sarah J. Maas
TOG, book one
Hardcover, 406 pages
Published February 14, 2023 (reprint)
ISBN 9781639730940

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

"I hate women like that. They're so desperate for the attention of men that they'd willingly betray and harm members of their own sex."

Oh, Celaena. We do not owe loyalty to people because we are of the same sex. This 'women supporting women' bs needs to die and rot. Gender is irrelevent to being a decent person. Betrayal is betrayal.

So when Celaena isn't pissing me off... I like her. The woman can banter with the best of them. Even if her go to is always and forever going to be threatening bodily harm and she uses the same tactic to flirt with just about every human male that gets close to her. These Maas FMCs be on my nerves like it's their own personal vendetta.

Chaol. Dorian. Both have their merits. Both also have their faults, and the greatest of those was their responses to Celaena's menstrual cycle. Chaol ran away and Dorian, the damned idiot, thought his best course of action was to antagonize her. Oh hell no! Stab him. Stab, stab, stab!

In the garden, the Captain of the Guard stared up at the young woman’s balcony, watching as she waltzed alone, lost in her dreams. But he knew that her thoughts weren’t of him.

She stopped and stared upward. Even from a distance, he could see the blush upon her cheeks. She seemed young—no, new. It made his chest ache.

Still, he watched, watched until she sighed and went inside. She never bothered to look below.

Chaol was the better of the two. Although... his "What did you do to deserve it?" comment really did sum up what his mentality was towards her. Truth be told, I would have phrased it the exact same way because let's not pretend Celaena doesn't knowingly put herself in consequential situations.

Dorian's "Your scars are awful" was far worse.

How does one become the Captain of the King's guard without ever taking a life? That's some serious nepotism right there.

After The Assassin and the Empire, I did expect that losing Sam would have haunted her more. Granted, it's been a year and I suppose her hormones wield more power than her heart and brain at this age. Just a bit disappointed there. I do need her to learn how to just be friends with a male. There’s no need to keep kissing everybody.

She actually made me miss Feyre with that crap.

3 out of 5 stars. I have no intention of reading this entire series. Actually, I'm skipping to book three. Because, frankly, I don't give a damn about book two. I'm more than ready for Rowan to punch Celaena in the face.

POWER IS NEVER GIVEN, ONLY TAKEN

Tobias Richter, the fearsome VP of Security of the TechCorps is dead. The puppetmaster is gone and the organization is scrambling to maintain control by ruthlessly limiting Atlanta's access to resources, hoping to quell rebellion. Our band of mercenary librarians have decided that the time for revolution has come.

Maya uses her wealth of secrets to weaken the TechCorps from within. Dani strikes from the shadows, picking off the chain of command one ambush at a time. And Nina is organizing their community—not just to survive, but to fight back. When Maya needs to make contact with a sympathetic insider, Dani and Rafe are the only ones with the skill-set and experience to infiltrate the highest levels of the TechCorps. They'll go deep undercover in the decadent, luxury-soaked penthouses on the Hill.

Bringing Dani face-to-face with the man who turned her into a killer. And forcing Rafe to decide how far he'll go to protect both of his families—the one he was born to, and the one he made for himself.

Victory will break the back of Power. Failure will destroy Atlanta.

The long awaited culmination of Dani and Rafe's constant flirting and heated tensions... and it did not disappoint!

When Dani and Rafe have to go undercover in order to infiltrate the elite's most exclusive parties with the intent of making contact with someone from Maya's past, the two are forced to confront the feelings they've been long evading.

And they do so beautifully. With maturity and a sensible conversation. They actually talk. And from there, the job comes first. Their safety and the success of their mission.

I absolutely loved how this played out for these two characters. And I loved how whenever they gravitated to one another, the result was an embrace. Not lust. Not mindless passion. But they clung to eachother as if they'd finally connected to their lost halves.

She marries him for revenge.

He marries her for her serpent mark.

On the eve of her twentieth birthday, Sol is kidnapped by a barbarian. He wants her to use the magic she doesn’t have to heal someone. She wants to avenge her mother by killing his chieftain.

Desperate to get close to their leader, she marries one of their warriors. Her husband vows to never bed her. She vows to win his favor.

When she’s plunged into his city, she realizes the depth of his people’s prejudices. They will never accept her if she doesn’t become like them. Even then, it may not be enough to obtain the vengeance she craves.

Author note: From the same world as Tattered. Betrayer is an enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance with plenty of tension and steam. It’s suitable for 18+. It’s the first in a series, ending with a cliffhanger.

I appreciate a book that hits the ground running and Betrayer does just that.

Sol is a Kyanite that has abandoned her people for a quest of vengeance against the Bloodstone, a fierce race of warriors that attacked her village years ago and slaughtered her Mother. Specifically she's after their chieftain, Roland.

But to get close enough, she has to infiltrate their tribe and as luck would have it, such an opportunity comes when Luc bribes a barmaid where Sol also works to abduct the seemingly powerful Kyanite in order to save his sister, Leah.

As a Kyanite, Sol should possess the magic of healing that her people are renowned for. And yet, while she may have the knowledge, she lacks the ability. Fortunately, her education in medicinal herbs allow her to treat Leah and earn her a chance at joining the Bloodstone.

A chance Gabriel is determined to block.

But Gabriel is a man of his beliefs. And the Seer has divulged that the mark of a serpent is tied to his future.

It is a mark that Sol bears on her wrist since the time when the gods cursed the Bloodstone and took away their powers.

When Sol offers herself as a wife to any of the Bloodstone in order to stay among them, it falls to Gabriel to bind with her.

I could go on and on with retelling this story because I was that invested in it. And after my last read (Avidian) it was nice to have a lead female with an actual focus on her mission. Gabriel, I adored. Things were simple for him. "I have no intention of bedding you." "I don't trust you." "Everything you say is a lie."

That's right. Fight the good fight, Gabriel.

He won't bed her, but he'll sure as hell help her get rid of a dead body when the need arises.

He doesn't trust her, but he forges her a dagger easy to conceal.

Yeah, I'm going to side eye you with that call.

The secrets swirling around Sol and Gabriel feed into the tension between them. Not just her secrets, but his. This book very much needed a POV chapter from Gabriel. His suspicions. His inner battles. I didn't have any expectations for the ending but even if I had, it wouldn't have included the Hector spin. It didn't make sense to me. Had the people never seen Hector? It was not an ending I predicted. It was not an ending I particularly liked. Nor was it the ending I wanted.

3 out of 5 stars. That ending just sank it.

If Shatter Me and Divergent had a morally gray baby raised by ghosts—it would be Avidian.

This is a spicy, binge-worthy romantasy set in a dystopian world where she’s forced to solve a murder using her rare ability to see the dead—and the man offering her a way out might be hiding the most dangerous secret of all.

I can see the dead. They tell me their secrets. But this time, their secrets might get me killed.

My name is Kat Sinclair, and the Volkov family owns me. People like me, born with special abilities, are called Avids. But my gift doesn’t spare me from the demands of Marco Volkov, the ruthless family patriarch who keeps me in line with the ever-present threat of violence.

When a grisly double murder involving a family nephew and a cook shakes the household, I’m forced to uncover the truth. The whispers of the dead reveal more than I bargained for, unearthing secrets that could destroy the Volkovs—and me.

But I met a charming stranger who might be able to help. Except he doesn’t know about my gift, my scars, or the dark past I can’t escape. But in his eyes, I see something I thought I’d lost long ago—hope.

If I want to escape, I’ll have to play along. But this murder might be hiding something even more dangerous. If I’m not careful, I’ll be the next one the dead are whispering about.
We're going to just dive right into this one...

Malachi is annoying. A complete nuisance. His personality is like that of a trickster god but without any redeeming charm to his words.

Until Kat decides that her best plan to secure information is to play the whore route and Malachi has to start slicing throats to get her out of it. Yes. Do that. Talk less, Malachi. More blade action.

Meanwhile, Kat... talk more. Ask more questions. What does he mean he has people. Who are these people? Who's the guy with the slanting head?

Eventually the unasked questions get answered and my, what a shift. We have an entire undercover, underground, operation making moves. The Sindicate, whose base is in a silo miles deep into the earth with layers of scientists, combatants, and more gearing up to overthrow the ruling families.

And damn, I found myself longing for new episodes of Silo on AppleTV.

Anyway, Malachi's mouth is finally providing useful intel and the story begins to pick up about midway. Before that, it was basically a murder mystery wherein Kat is tasked with identifying the unsub in the murder of her master's nephew. Despite the fact that she can talk to the dead, the nephew is an arse and totally uninterested in communicating anything helpful to the situation.

He's not dead.
In one ear and out the other. I can't even begin to try to understand why the character would ignore something like this. Not even a second thought. Not a fraction of a fraction of a second thought. But hey, makes for a great time to go on a winter wonderland date and ride the ferris wheel. What is happening?! Who's not dead? Because the only person that's not suppose to be alive and yet, we've seen no evidence of their death is...

I have never wanted to slap some sense into a character so hard before. Kat has the attention span of a fruit fly. Good gods, woman, when someone hands you the journal of a murder victim, you don't just tuck it into your waist band and you sure af don't start at the beginning when you finally crack it open!

Without it, I would have come to the same conclusion, but it did speed up the process.

Chiiild! You didn't solve a damn thing. They didn't even need you had they just read the journal in the first place. This is some bs right here.

The darkness holds more than just secrets...

Marked for death, Sabine escaped from her home more than ten years ago.

But the Wild Hunt will never give up.

It should have been easy to stay hidden. All Sabine had to do was keep her head down, avoid telling anyone about her past, and above all else -- not let her glamour drop.

Even the best-laid plans eventually fall apart.

When a charismatic stranger arrives in the city, Sabine finds herself unwittingly drawn to him and the power she can sense hidden within him. Keeping her distance is nearly impossible, especially after a life debt is called due and she’s tasked into helping steal a rare artifact.

Sabine is the only one who can break the magical barriers protecting the item, but that means revealing the truth about her identity and exposing her darkest secrets.

Unfortunately, the Fae aren’t the only ones hunting her.

And the most dangerous monsters aren’t always confined to the dark.

When Sabine is attacked by four men looking for a payout for her assassination, she makes quick work of two. The third manages to draw blood but is easily dispatched alongside his companions. When she turns for the fourth, Sabine discovers him in a pool of blood at the feet of a stranger.

A tall, dark-haired, lethal male with a deep blue aura being escorted by the town goblin? Things just got interesting.

Malek Rish'dan. Captain Malek Rish'dan. A man who possesses Fae knowledge without any Fae appearance. Not quite human but something else Sabine can't pinpoint. A man with sensitivity to magic, or so she summizes as he tracks her glamouring her assailant's tattoos and enchanting a wooden coin for a lanky child on the street.

Sabine's power had called to him from the moment of his ship's arrival at the dock. When she offers to honor the debt of his aide, he strategically negotiates a simple dinner.

To ask for more than what's due would have negated the debt entirely.

In a world with demons and trolls, goblins and fae, it's Sabine whose spoken name silences a room. No one dares cross her. No one dares touch her. If she isn't enough of a threat on her own, then it's the demon, Dax, whose protection she is under that would give them pause. If not him, then surely his estranged brother, Bane. Heads of the thieves guild and assassins guild, respectively.

When the goblin, Pozgil, informs Dax of the attack against Sabine it becomes clear that heads are going to roll and limbs are going to tear.

When Dax finds Sabine's mark on Malek's wrist the threat of violence is just as imminent.

The book occasionally shifts from Sabine to Malek's POV and it's a feature I adored because Sabine can't fingure him out. And even Malek withholds his true identity and intentions from the reader for most of the story.

Leave it to Bane to finally solve the mystery.

Malek is a dragon. Not the average ship captain nor common smuggler. He's hunting Fae artifacts to mend the failing seal on the closed portal. Should it fall completely, war will return to their kinds.

This is a good read for anyone into kickass females surrounded by overprotective alpha males and all the pixies, witches, goblins, demons, and dragons one could hope for. That said, it's merely an introduction to the series that will span about six books. This installment ends just as Sabine's twin brother, Rhys, has recalled the Wild Hunt to track her down. He wants her dead in order to claim the magic he believes her existence has stolen from him. Sabine, accompanied by Bane, flees Akros aboard Malek's ship and that's where book one closes.

Without waiting for a response, she turned away from the demon and walked toward a dragon. And behind her, the city continued to burn.

Dax. Bane. Jacoby. This author watches a lot of American television. Malek. Riven. Rhys. Now she's just teasing outright.

In a bid for more power, the Shadow Queen of Haradis has unleashed a malignant force into the world. Her son Brishen, younger prince of the Kai royal house, suddenly finds himself ruler of a kingdom blighted by a diseased darkness and on the brink of war. His human wife Ildiko must decide if she will give up the man she loves in order to secure his throne.

Three enemy kingdoms must unite to save each other, and a one-eyed, reluctant king must raise an army of the dead to defeat an army of the damned.

A tale of alliance and sacrifice.

It’s been ten years since I read this book’s predecessor, but this sequel took me back to all the warm feels of Brishen, a spare prince of little value, his hag of a bride, Ildiko, (I jest. Sort of.) and their fantastical love story.

When Brishen's mother unleashes a horde of galla (demons) into their world, it is left to Brishen, the seemingly lone survivor of their royal line, to save the kingdom. Now, the Kai prince whose only worth was to be wed to a human noblewoman to secure an alliance, is left with the feat of betraying his people's access to their magic in order to sever his spirit from his body. To become an eidolon. To become a Wraith King. To raise an army of the dead in order to force the galla back through the breach and seal it shut. And now, the same duty that forced a wife upon him would require him to put her aside.

For Ildiko is a human and, as such, she can never produce an heir for Brishen. And while Brishen may be willing to die for the kingdom, he will not surrender the wife he has grown to love. Ildiko, though, is under no illusion of her own value in the predicament, and begins strategizing a worthy replacement to serve as Brishen’s wife and queen. Even as her heart is breaking.

Mercifully, and fortunately, a loyal nursemaid and two royal guards have secured the infant daughter of Brishen’s brother. Their only task is to see her safely delivered to Brishen to be raised as queen. If the spirit of Brishen’s vile mother doesn’t possess her first.

Multiple races carefully navigate the City of Elantra under the Dragon Emperor’s wing. His Imperial Wolves are executioners, the smallest group to serve in the Halls of Law. The populace calls them assassins.

Every wolf candidate must consent to a full examination by the Tha’alani, one of the most feared and distrusted races in Elantra for their ability to read minds. Most candidates don’t finish their job interviews.

Severn Handred, the newest potential recruit, is determined to face and pass this final test—even if by doing so he’s exposing secrets he has never shared.

When an interrogation uncovers the connections to a two-decade-old series of murders of the Tha’alani, the Wolves are commanded to hunt. Severn’s first job will be joining the chase. From the High Halls to the Tha’alani quarter, from the Oracles to the Emperor, secrets are uncovered, tensions are raised and justice just might be done…if Severn can survive.

Severn Handred was the first morally grey character I was ever drawn to. The first (and only?) character I ever fancasted. The one character that, with newly acquired book in hand, I would flip through the pages in haste to find any and all occurrences where “Severn” appeared.

So imagine my excitement when I learned that the Severn Handred was the center of Sagara’s newest (and I use that world loosely) installment in the world of Elantra—The Emperor’s Wolves.

I was obsessed with this character. This man who would slaughter two children to save his… hell, what was Elianne to him? His ward? His best friend? His family? His only would be confidant? His only anything?

When the deed was done and Elianne had fled, Severn finds himself being recruited by the Wolves. I expected an initiation. I expected training. I expected Severn’s story to finally be told.

But this wasn’t that. Not really.

I don’t know what this was.

Some of it was there… Once I dragged myself past seventy percent of the book.

And then came the audacity of this revelation:

I distinctly remember the scene where Elianne and Severn are reunited. It’s been twenty damn years since I’ve read that book but I still recall Severn saying he didn’t recognize her new name. But he did! He knew her name! He’d known it for years. Severn lied.

That sum of a bitch lied.

I didn't love it. I don't hate it. I'm just sitting here being the fool I am for having expectations because I have never been so disappointed.

The viral TikTok stalker dark romance, burning with high heat, hilarious banter, and a love story like you’ve never seen before. Can you handle the ride?

I want someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

Trauma nurse Alyssa Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

I want things most people don’t, craving darkness and depravity instead of light and love.

Joshua Hammond has an infamous father—the kind of man that true-crime podcasts love talking about. Josh has spent his life avoiding the limelight, but his online persona is another story. At night, he posts masked thirst traps for his millions of fans to drool over, but one follower has caught his Aly. After reading a comment begging him to break into her house wearing a mask, he decides to take her up on her offer.

Together, Aly and Josh live out their darkest fantasies, unaware that Aly has captured the attention of someone else. Someone with far more sinister intentions than a little light stalking. As Josh turns from predator to protector and the stakes heighten, he must ask himself how far he’s willing to go for the woman he’s obsessed with.

Lights Out is a fast-paced dark romance with a morally gray male lead. Some themes and scenes may be disturbing to readers. Please check the TWs at the beginning of the book.

I laughed. I blushed. I questioned the mental health of the author. And yeah, I cringed on a few occasions.

But the one thing I could not do is predict this book. He wouldn't. Oh he would! He's not. Damn it, he is! Could not keep my jaw off the floor.

Dark, contemporary romance may not be my thing but if you're going to experience this book, do it through the audiobook because Josh is amazing and the casting for his part... Chef's kiss.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

"I know exactly who and what you are, Violet Sorrengail."

What is she?

I have questions. So many questions.

3.5 out of 5 stars. And those stars earned are strictly for Xaden Riorson, Tairn, Andarna, and Ridoc, because Violet... I'm not there with her yet.

Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter #1)

Night Pleasures

Dark-Hunters, book one
Kindle Edition, 321 pages
Audiobook, 10+ hours

See how it all began…

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be immortal? To journey through the night stalking the evil that preys on humans? To have unlimited wealth, unlimited power?

That is my existence, and it is dark and dangerous. I play hero to thousands, but am known to none. And I love every minute of it.

Or so I thought until one night when I woke up handcuffed to my worst nightmare: an accountant. She’s smart, sexy, witty, and wants nothing to do with the paranormal.

My attraction to Amanda Devereaux goes against everything I stand for. Not to mention the last time I fell in love it cost me not only my human life, but also my very soul. Now I find myself wanting to believe that love and loyalty do exist. Even more disturbing, I find myself wondering if there’s any way a woman can love a man whose battle scars run deep, and whose heart was damaged by a betrayal so savage that he’s not sure it will ever beat again.

Never made it past the prequel to this series. Pretty sad, considering that book, Fantasy Lover, gave this blog its name.

Amanda Devereaux comes from a family all too familiar with magic and mischief. She herself wants nothing to do with the powers she possesses - powers of premonitions that she's failed to harness to the point where they actually benefit her. Plus, she's scarred from being unable to save her best friend when her powers gave her the foresight to do so. But when her sister is targeted by a daimon, and the dark hunter Kyrian gets literally chained to her side, Amanda faces up to the paranormal aspect of her existence.

While the Dark Hunter series doesn't do it for me the way the League series does, or did, I do find it an enjoyable experience. Albeit a simple one.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

What caught me was the cover. Assassin's Creed spread all over it. What hooked me was the blurb. Resistance? Empire? Do I really need to say the words 'Star Wars'? And it's a dystopian fantasy based on ancient Rome, so, yes, if I'm going to read anything YA this was certainly going to be it.

Now, I didn't want to get ahead of myself. It could easily all go horribly wrong in the end as it did in the Hunger Games. And Divergent. And nobody wants to revisit that let down.

If you browse this blog for any amount of time, you'll find that I'm not one that's big on Young Adult books. Most of the ones I find are trivial. Some shallow. Sone menial. I need substance in my literature. I need depth in my fiction. I also want to make that very clear because I am admittedly bias when it comes to this genre of romance.

Laia, pressured by her parents' legacy and desperate to save her captive brother, is thrust into the life of a slave so as to serve as a spy for the Resistance. She needs their help in saving her brother, the only family she has left, from punishment for treason against the Empire, a tyrannical government order that seeks to conquer and control all Scholars, among other things. But despite being a daughter of two of the rebellion's finest fighters, Laia is in no way prepared for the task put to her.

Inside this oppressive order's training academy, is Elias. The Commandant's son, with fourteen years of strict training behind him, he is, on the surface, the epitome of what a soldier should be. But days away from graduation as a Mask, Elias has but one thing on his mind: desertion. To further complicate matters, he's suddenly thrust onto a path of becoming Emperor. His feelings for his best friend, Helene, have gotten complicated. And then Laia arrives.

Truth be told, I was far more interested in Elias than Laia. But that's nothing new. His portion of the book will span trials that will challenge his fears and loyalty but, more so,  challenge his sense of justice and, regardless of which path he takes, Elias will become a killer numerous times over. While he and Laia will be forced to make tough choices, in the end, they are alive because others will make tougher choices. Story of YA life.

Why do all the Young Adult books I pick up have love triangles? Perhaps this is where the foundation of my bias against YA books lie, the unnecessary angst. Teenage protagonists too raw, too immature to know themselves let alone their hearts. Hearts? No. These are hormones.

Laia physically reacts to each and every boy that shows her interest. It's downright sickening. Perhaps it is why I prefer characters with enough maturity to know that not every handsome face deserves a second glance. And female characters hardened enough not to whine.

Not only did I prefer Elias over Laia. But I preferred Helene over her, too.

That said, this book, Ember in the Ashes, is what more YA should strive to be, as the numerous literary awards it's won would attest. And even though it holds the typical love triangles and weak females, there's enough turmoil to balance the frivolous teenage problems of feelings. There's a darker side wherein rape is a very real encounter that I think fewer books need to give mind to but reality being what it is and all, I can't fault its appearance.

Every Life Has a Price

Dakari Tievel has been marked for death by the infamous League. Staying barely one step ahead of the assassins out to end her life, she must find the legendary Eve of Destruction. But Eve is a lot more than just a bounty hunter who calls the shadows home. She comes with an interesting crew of friends and family who have no problem defying the League that rules their worlds with an iron fist.

Now they must rely on the most unlikely of allies to keep Dakari safe, and themselves alive. Provided he doesn't betray them.

In a universe where the League is law, it's killed or be killed.

This ridiculously quick read opens up in the POV of Dakari who has just had a Thrill-Kill contract put on her life. On the run, she's given precious information that leads her to Eve and her lethal team. A team that includes Eve's sister, Jayne, whom we all know and possibly love, and also Jinx, Dakari's long lost (and believed to be dead) older brother.

From there, we take on the conclusion of the story through Jinx's POV. As a whole, this is more like a teaser chapter that just happens to be included with two other stories: "Neighbors" and "Fire and Ice." The latter of which is Adron's story which can also be found in the "In Other Worlds" anthology. Adron is the eldest son of Nykyrian and Kiara (Born of Night, League #1).

A fate worse than death . . .

Bastien Cabarro survived the brutal slaughter of his entire family only to have his wife pin their murders on him. Made Ravin by The League, he is now a target for their assassins-in-training to hunt and kill. The average life expectancy for such beings is six weeks. But defying the odds is what this Gyron Force officer does best, and Bastien won’t rest until he lays his betrayers in their graves.

Ten years later, he has one chance to balance the scales of justice, provided he relies on his former wingman— the very sister of the woman who testified against him. Major Ember Wyldestarrin joined the outlaw Tavali the day Kirovar fell into the hands of a tyrant, and she and her team were left on an outpost to die under the barrage of enemy fire. The last thing she wants is to be involved in politics again. But if she doesn’t bring Bastien in, her sister will pay the ultimate price. Now she has to find some way to betray her former wingman before he catches on and kills her. Even so, treachery doesn’t come easy to a woman who took a loyalty oath to protect her homeworld and comrades-in-arms, especially when Bastien means more to her than just another partner.

Yet as she tries to do right for her family, she learns that Bastien doesn’t just hold the key to the fate of Kirovar, he is vital to The Sentella-League war, and to The Tavali. If she hands him over, three nations fall. If she doesn’t, her entire family dies. Their fates are all in her hands, and time for all of them is quickly running out.

I admit it. I was warned. But despite this installment being a copy/paste filler that feels like a half-ass slap in the face, none of that quite pissed me off as much as the leading male- Bastien.

The story begins in the prologue with a fast paced meeting of our two protagonists as Bastien shows up when Ember needs someone most and saves the life of her sister, Alura. (Saving that witch will prove to be his first of many mistakes.) And from that moment, and throughout the entire book, we're scene jumping.

First to where Bastien proposes marriage to Ember after a yearlong romance only to be turned down outright. And here he does the one thing that will f*ck his life over for years to come. Bastien retaliates.

Now you'll find out in good time why Ember refused his proposal but so many years will pass first. And Bastien will make one stupid decision after another in this time. He'll even marry her sister. Is this suppose to be some ridiculous nod to the Ross and Rachel fiasco. Where is your loyalty? Where is your honor?!

So many (hell, nearly ALL) of Kenyon's characters are tortured souls who are victims of things beyond their control whether it be their parentage, their race, being in the wrong place/wrong time in the heart of political chaos, but Bastien is simply a victim of himself. Ends up in a manipulated marriage, accused of murdering his entire family, stripped of his royal titles, outcast from his people, marked Ravin... And  he's eyeing Nykyrian's daughter, Thia. And Jayne. *facepalm*

No, Ember. No. I want better for you, girl.
